The large porch that encircles the house on the second floor offers very pretty views of the property. It must have been wonderful to have actually lived in this house. There is a tree at one side of the house that Hemingway himself planted on the day he moved in. On the other side you have a view of the lighthouse over the trees. There are lots of brightly colored flowers blooming everywhere.
Hemingway had a regulation size boxing ring built in the back yard. His wife never did like it and he returned from a trip to discover that she had replaced it with a pool while he was away. Hemingway hated that pool. The pool cost twice as much as the house and he gave her a penny and told her now she had his last penny! She dropped the penny into wet cement by the pool, where it still is today. This was the same wife who took down all the ceiling fans while he was on another trip.
There are several small secluded areas on the property. I found one that had a little bench and I could imagine sitting there dreaming up the next story. Hemingway's home is a must see if you visit Key West Florida. A very pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. |
