Chickens and Roosters Key West Florida
Key West is famous for its wandering chickens and roosters. They can be found roaming the streets, dodging traffic, wandering into stores and restaurants, and crowing way too early in the morning. |

Why all the wandering fowl? I asked several people and got several colorful answers. The best (and cleanest!) answer I could get was that they are supposedly descended from fowl brought to the island by Cuban and Bahamian settlers for food. They were also trained as fighting cocks.
OK, that sounds like a good reason for how they originally got to Key West... but why are they still running around loose? Check out all the chicken and rooster themed tourist shops and gifts and you might find a clue as to why the Key West fowl still wander.
